Chevron, Cummins Expand Collab on Lower-Emission Fuels

Chevron Corp. and Cummins Inc. have entered a deal to grow the market for lower-emission fuels by raising the production of such energy sources and promoting the deployment of technologies that consume them.

The memorandum of understanding announced Thursday follows an earlier one in 2021 that aimed to promote the hydrogen and natural gas fuel sectors.   They have now expanded that cooperation to include other lower-carbon fuels such as liquid renewables, the USA companies said in a joint press release.

"Cummins and Chevron each have contributed to the research, development and global deployment of alternative fuels innovation, systems and technologies and will work together on enabling the commercial development at scale of alternative fuels production, transportation and delivery systems for industrial and commercial markets, with target consumption by transportation vehicles of the type manufactured by Cummins", the announcement said.

"Workstreams in the new collaboration focus on hydrogen, natural gas, and other alternative lower carbon intensity fuels such as renewable gasoline blend, biodiesel, renewable diesel, compressed natural gas, and other liquid renewables to expand commercial adoption."

Jennifer Rumsey, chief executive of Cummins, said the pacts with Chevron are part of the fuel and power generation tech maker's strategy for achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

"At Cummins, we are working to bring our Destination Zero strategy to life, and we recognize we can’t do this alone”, Rumsey said in a statement.

Destination Zero, Cummins' roadmap toward carbon neutrality, "reduces well-to-wheels emissions by matching technology readiness with infrastructure readiness", the company said in a press release January 25, 2022 introducing the strategy. Destination Zero targets hydrogen growth, emissions reduction from internal combustion engines and grid decarbonization, the release said.

On March 8 Cummins launched a zero-emission products brand called Accelera, a $1.5 billion investment.

"Accelera is advancing a range of zero-emissions solutions, including hydrogen fuel cells, batteries, e-axles, traction systems and electrolyzers, to sustainably power a variety of industries from commercial transportation to chemical production", Cummins said announcing the brand. "Both a components supplier and integrator, Accelera is decarbonizing applications like buses, trucks, trains, construction equipment, stationary power and carbon intense industrial processes."

Rumsey said in Thursday's media statement with Chevron, "By collaborating strategically with Chevron, we plan to improve access to fuel and infrastructure for our customers, helping grow the availability of alternative and renewable fuels while reducing emissions.”

Chevron president of Americas products Andy Walz said, "Collaborations like this one with Cummins are intended to make energy and global supply chains more affordable and reliable while helping commercial fleets who use our products and Cummins’ equipment to advance a lower carbon world".

The earlier memorandum of understanding involved, as jointly announced July 15, 2021, "advancing public policy that promotes hydrogen as a decarbonizing solution for transportation and industry; building market demand for commercial vehicles and industrial applications powered by hydrogen; developing infrastructure to support the use of hydrogen for industry and fuel cell vehicles; and exploring opportunities to leverage Cummins electrolyzer and fuel cell technologies at one or more of Chevron’s domestic refineries".
